Abstract: 
Based on the analysis of the issued for the past 15 years scientific papers dedicated to scientific aspects of the engine oil improvement and taking into account the requirement to oil performance resulting from economical and ecological factors, an attempt to formulate the scientific principles for engine oil formulations has been made.
